Joseph Ayala received his B.A. in Political Science from Columbia University in 1994 and his M.F.A. in Creative Non-Fiction from Sarah Lawrence College in 1999. He taught middle school social studies and English as well as high school courses in political ethics and leadership theory at Prep for Prep. Joe’s background in youth development dates back to college when he coordinated childcare for Columbia University’s Harlem Restoration Project. He was previously a Program Coordinator at Directions for Our Youth, Inc. as well as The Health Career Partnership Program at Isabella Geriatric Center, where he provided college counseling and job skills training for high school students. He joined Publicolor in 2006 from Prep for Prep where for seven years he was the Director of Upper School Counseling, serving over 400 New York City high school students attending independent schools. At Publicolor, he was in charge of overseeing the Next Steps program during the school year, and the Summer Design Studio program. He took over as Executive Director of the Double Discovery Center at Columbia University in February of 2014.
